From Waste to Farm

Agriculture is one of the most critical practices for the maintenance of a country since sedentary human civilization. Unfortunately, there are many challenges that are faced during agricultural applications. These difficulties result in decreased yield and economic loss. The plant diseases are the biggest reasons behind this productivity decrease. Moreover, diseases in plants caused by a wide range of pathogens are one of the main reasons for crop yield loss. These pathogens are responsible for the damage in many plants including barley, oat, bean, onion, tomato, and rice. According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), these plant diseases cause a considerable reduction in crops up to 40% annually in the world. Furthermore, this crop loss cost the global economy more than $220 billion. (Image credit: Florida Division of Plant Industry, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Bugwood.org)

Production of biofertilizer and biopesticide using biotechnologically treated wastes of food industry

To inhibit the growth and spread of these harmful organisms, pesticides are commonly used by a wide range of people from hobby garden owners to farmers over 100 years, the pesticides have resulted in increased productivity and quality. However, the overuse and abuse of pesticides cause unrecallable damage to the environment, soil structure, and health of living things because the pesticides are chemical. In addition to that, pathogens are able to gain resistance to chemicals over time and this situation reduces the functionality of the used pesticides. That is why there are strict regulations on the use of chemical pesticides and political pressure to remove the most dangerous chemicals from the market nowadays and researchers suggest to use of biological control agents (BCAs) called biopesticides instead of chemical pesticides. Here at Valentis Biotech®, a chain of processes developed to turn wastes into usable materials for microorganisms. At the end of the process, wastes become highly efficient culture media to produce plant-growth-promoting and/or disease-fighting bacteria and molds.
